Background

NHS England has published four separate UK wide consultations on proposed changes to medicines legislation to allow certain groups of Allied Health Professionals to prescribe or supply and administer medicines as follows:

• Independent prescribing by radiographers

• Independent prescribing by paramedics

• Supplementary prescribing by dietitians

• Use of exemptions within the Human Medicines Regulations by orthoptists

Details of the consultations are available on the NHS England consultation website here

Purpose of the events

The events will be an opportunity for patients, carers and the public to develop their understanding of the four proposals that NHS England are currently consulting on. Attendees will have an opportunity to share their views and comments on the proposed changes. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions in order to seek clarity on the proposals.

Format of the day

The events will include a short presentation on each proposal, small group discussions and question and answer sessions. The events will be independently facilitated and cover the following:

• Current roles of the four professions

• Current use of medicines by each profession

• The potential benefits of the proposed changes for the public, patients and carers

• The consultation process and how to respond to each consultation
